Maryland Youth of the Year 2020-2021
“The Boys & Girls Club has helped make me the person I am today. When I think about the Club, what comes to my mind is being a mentor. I really enjoy helping the younger kids as a Leader in Training and Junior Staff member. I remember how much I looked up to my mentors and I never imagined that I would one day become a mentor myself. The mentors at the Club have helped me to overcome obstacles, set goals, build confidence and given me leadership opportunities that helped me to mature. The words -Respect, Positivity, Integrity, Success are written on the walls throughout the Club and I am so grateful to the staff for teaching and instilling these words in me.
This year I have also had the honor to be named as Maryland Youth of the Year. I love being an ambassador not only for my club but for all of the Boys & Girls Clubs in the state of Maryland. Communicating the benefits of the Club is easy for me because I am the perfect example about how the Boys & Girls Club helps people. I really believe in what happens here.”
Youth of the Year
The Boys & Girls Club shaped me into the person I am today. My leadership really flourished when I was chosen to lead the club’s robotics team. The Club provided a safe space where I was able to express my ideas and create art. I was fascinated with cartoons so when a staff member mentored me, my creativity blossomed. I was thrilled when I was asked to create art for the Club’s STEM room. The lessons I learned at the Club have really helped me in my life. They taught me to think less about the small things and focus on the more important ones; to let go of a mistake and make a plan so it doesn’t happen again; and to rely on others when something is too difficult. I am so grateful to the Boys & Girls Club for helping me to become the confident and resilient person I am today.
Junior Youth of the Year
“The Boys & Girls Club is amazing at helping kids and teens cope and express how they are feeling. A lot of kids my age are going through mentally difficult times especially with the pandemic. The staff and programs at the Club have really helped me understand how I feel and teach me how I can express those feelings. I am so grateful that I am a member of the Boys & Girls Club program!”
Junior Youth of the Year
Tyler loves his time at the Boys & Girls Club and has taken advantage of the many opportunities here. He is member of the Keystone Club, a Leader in Training and resident Tech savvy member. Tyler loves participating in STEM programs at the club and says, “the cool activities at the Club made me realize how much fun it is to work with my hands. I don’t like sitting and watching so that hands on work made me realize that I want to go into aerospace engineering.” Tyler is great role model and the perfect example of what happens when you get involved at the Club.
Elementary Youth of the Year
Alice surprised us with her quiet determination and leadership potential. She is the definition of a team player, always engaged and focused. With her a can-do attitude and limitless potential, she is the perfect role model for our Elementary members. Alice has a usual maturity for her age but we would be remiss if we didn’t point out her fiery personality. Alice is super intelligent (always straight A’s) and a really witty kid. She is perfect addition to the BGC Leadership Wall.
This award honors our youngest members! Even at his young age, Logan’s outstanding leadership potential and positive attitude were obvious at the Club! Logan is always the first to volunteer to help the staff or join a new program. His infectious smile puts everyone at ease and he has made many new friends here. Logan is a great role model for other members and we are so happy to celebrate him as our Rising Star!
The Capree Brown Heart of a Champion Award
Our first Club graduate is the namesake of this special award.
Capree was born premature, with severe medical issues that have required years of surgeries, leaving him legally blind. Capree is a gentle soul with an amazingly positive attitude. Capree inspires everyone he meets and leaves them with a smile. After graduation, Capree went on to work at Carroll Hospital where he continues to inspire those around him. When asked about his time at the Boys & Girls Club of Westminster Capree said, “this is my home and these are my people. I feel safe here.”
Heart of a Champion 2019-2020
“I am not sure where I would be today without the Boys & Girls Club. It is truly my home away from home. Coming to the Club means a lot to me because it is my safe place; a place where I can be myself. I have learned a lot about responsibility and trust through my time at the Club. I have had wonderful mentors who support me and learning from them, I have tried to mentor some middle school girls at the Club. Mentoring these girls helped me realize that we are all alike in some way – I always try to validate their feelings and treat them the way I would want to be treated. Seeing them when I come to the Club brightens my day! I feel good when I come to the Boys & Girls Club because they have given me a chance to be an actual leader and make a real impact with my message!”
